Weather Closures

The decision to close school is taken very seriously. There are many variables that are considered before making this decision and safety is always the top priority.

With weather patterns that change hourly in this area, it is very difficult to accurately predict snow-days a day or two in advance. Therefore, starting at 5:00 a.m. we have at least three administrators driving the roads determining if buses can safely transport our students, and to check wind-chill temperatures at different locations throughout the District. We are also in constant contact with Road & Bridge on the timeliness and progress of their road plowing efforts. This is continually done until 6AM when we aim to have a decision made.

Having some employees (mostly bus drivers and cooks) leaving their homes extremely early each morning, we strive to make the decision to hold or cancel school by 6:00 a.m. the morning of the school day.

As real-time weather information is being gathered, Superintendent Shackett is in contact with superintendents in District 91, Shelley, and sometimes Rigby, to monitor their decision making progress. At 6AM (sometimes 6:20 on the more difficult calls) the decision is made. If it is to cancel school, the media outlets are immediately called and you should be getting the word within minutes. If we are not canceling school, we do not contact the media and you will not hear Bonneville School District listed among the closures being announced on radio and television.

5:00 a.m. District officials begin observing the weather and taking wind-chill observations throughout the district.
5:30 a.m. District officials collect the information and make contact with neighboring school districts and Road & Bridge
6:00 to 6:20 a.m. Superintendent Shackett makes the decision to open or cancel school; notifications begin on social media, the local news and an email is sent to parents and staff.
